An introduction ...

I have created this blog with very little idea about what I am going to write, and few expectations about anyone actually reading it! I imagine that I will probably only really update it when I am travelling – not something that happens nearly as often as I should wish, so posts could be few and far between!

That said, tomorrow afternoon I am heading over to New York to stay with Hedy – a good friend from my university days. Hedy is doing a month long placement at the NYC Chief Medical Examiner’s Office, so has rented an apartment in Manhattan. I won’t go into how jealous I am that Hedy is getting to something so ridiculously cool! Who would have thought we both did the same Forensics Masters degree? Oh well. Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda….

I have never been to New York, but I have wanted to go as long as I can remember. So, despite being a bit poor at the moment, this trip is an early 30th birthday present to me, from me. At the moment, there is a bit of excitement – so much that I could run about the room shouting – but (fortunately for my office) this is being suppressed by the another part of me – the bit that is run by my hatred of flying. If I could just click my heals together and be there, then I would be so excited right now. And it is no longer just the flying I hate; it is the getting to the airport, the checking in, the going through customs and then the long wait for boarding. I hate all of it! It makes my stomach churn just thinking about it. In fact, sitting on the plane and watching a film has probably become the part that stresses me out the least. Quite ridiculous.

Once all that stress is out of the way, I land at Newark Liberty airport tomorrow night at 8.15pm, where I have 45 minutes to find a bus that is taking me to Hedy’s address in Manhattan. I won’t arrive there until about 10pm, but I am hopeful that this won’t be too late to go for a drink. Another friend from university – Giovanna – and her boyfriend will be there too for a couple of days, so we should have a good catch up.

On Friday morning I will begin my exploration of what I expect to be the most amazing city I have been to – possibly even better than London… I am a bit biased there but we shall see. I am hoping not to be too much of a tourist. I have no inclination for scurrying about in a hurry trying to get from one place to the next. I have a small list of ‘must-see’ places, and the rest of the time I just want to wonder about and take it all in. I don’t want to ‘do New York’, I just want to go there and enjoy it! Although I am pretty sure that my images of Hedy and I wandering around in a cool and sassy Carrie Bradshaw manner may be replaced by clicking cameras and guide books by day, and by broken shoes and alcohol by night! I am sure even Carrie Bradshaw gets drunk some of the time though, doesn’t she?
